U.S. Initiates Next Stage in Gaza Peace Efforts, Warns Hamas Over Hostage Body

The U.S. has declared it is progressing to the subsequent phase in a peace initiative aimed at the Gaza region, which involves disarming Hamas, reconstruction, and establishing governance.

Steve Witkoff, an envoy for Trump, announced this as part of the president's "20 Point Plan to Resolve the Gaza Conflict." This phase seeks to transition from the prior ceasefire settled on late last year to include demilitarizing, forming a new technocratic government, and beginning rebuilding efforts.

Witkoff remained reticent on specifics regarding the interim Palestinian government expected to oversee Gaza per the plan.

Neither did the White House disclose additional information immediately. Witkoff emphasized that the U.S. anticipates Hamas to return the last deceased hostage, in accordance with the agreement.

"Failing to comply will lead to serious repercussions," Wikoff insisted.

The body is thought to belong to Ran Gvili, who was part of an elite Israeli police squad. After aiding in rescue efforts during an attack on October 7, he was ultimately killed elsewhere, and his remains taken to Gaza. His death was confirmed by the military four months later, leaving behind his family.

To date, Israel has been sent back 20 living hostages plus the bodies of 27 others since a prisoner exchange took place. Returning remains forms a vital portion of the ceasefire's conditions, which persists despite mutual allegations of breaches by both Israel and Hamas.
