21-Hour Ordeal: Passengers En Route to Paris Stranded in Turkmenistan

Travelers flying to Paris faced an unexpected situation when their Air France flight was redirected to Turkmenistan, prolonging their journey by nearly two additional days.

Unexpected Detour to Ashgabat

The travelers on Flight 191 were already considerably delayed when they took off from Bengaluru, India, departing close to midnight with a 21-hour delay. The aircraft, a 26-year-old Boeing 777 marked F-GSPI, was scheduled to reach Paris in approximately 10 hours. However, complications arose four hours into the journey when the jet began to descend unexpectedly, necessitating a diversion to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Though the exact reason for the diversion remains unclear, The Independent suggested potential engine troubles.

Awaiting Rescue in a Reclusive Nation

The passengers experienced an additional lengthy delay in Turkmenistan, a country known for its highly controlled government and isolation from global politics, according to Human Rights Watch. Despite inquiries, Air France has not offered a public explanation for the diversion or the delays.

Among the stranded were numerous Indian nationals who received aid from the Indian consulate, which ensured their well-being during the unexpected stopover in Ashgabat.

Assistance and Alternative Arrangements

Eventually, Air France arranged for another Boeing 777 to pick up the stranded travelers. Departing from Paris the following morning, the spare plane reached Ashgabat after approximately a five-hour flight. Passengers departed after spending around three hours on the ground, resuming their journey to Paris about 22 hours after initially arriving in Turkmenistan.

Touching down in Paris at 3:23 a.m. on Wednesday, the travelers completed their trip a staggering 43 hours later than initially planned. Notably, the initial aircraft remained stationed in Ashgabat for days following the incident.

A Similar Scenario

Such rescue missions by Air France are not without precedent. In 2024, an emergency situation during a flight from Paris to Seattle forced a detour to Canada's Iqaluit due to smoky cabin conditions. Passengers were rerouted via New York on an alternative Boeing 777 following flight adjustments.
