Spotify Premium Becoming More Costly in February
Price Increases for Duo and Family Plans
Starting from February, Spotify will be adjusting the cost of its premium services, increasing subscription fees by $1 to $2 broadly. This adjustment echoes a previous price increase that the company implemented in 2024. Users in the United States, as well as Estonia and Latvia, will be receiving notifications via email about the upcoming higher charges on their February invoices.
Justifying the Price Changes
Spotify explains that these price hikes are part of an effort to match the service's value offering, sustain the best user experience possible, and ensure artists benefit fairly. The company shared that in the previous year, it disbursed an impressive $10 billion to those holding music rights. Nevertheless, controversy arose during an awards event hosted by Spotify, where multiple Grammy-nominated songwriters abstained in protest against what they consider diminishing royalty payments from Spotify streams.
Updated Payment Details for Subscribers
Active subscribers who choose to maintain their premium accounts will see new pricing, with the individual plan transitioning to $13 monthly, up from $12, and the student plan rising to $7 from $6. Subscribers of the Duo plan will have to shell out $19 monthly instead of $17, while the Family plan users will face a $22 fee, marking a $2 increment from its former $20 cost. For those considering cancellation, there are guides available to facilitate this process.
Past Controversies involving Spotify
Towards the end of last year, Spotify endured criticism for featuring recruitment advertisements for ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). The company clarified that these ads were components of a broader U.S. government initiative that extended its reach to platforms, such as Meta and Google. Spotify has recently confirmed that this particular advertising campaign has concluded, and no ICE advertisements are active on the service at present.
