OpenAI Backs Sam Altman's Emerging Brain-Technology Startup, Merge Labs

A substantial investment has been made in a neurotechnology startup co-founded by OpenAI's own CEO, a billionaire, which is set to revolutionize brain-computer connectivity.

Merge Labs has garnered a remarkable $252 million in financial backing from OpenAI, Bain Capital, renowned for private investments, and influential figures like game producer Gabe Newell. Their focus is to harness ultrasound to both read and adjust the brain's activities.

This initiative places Merge alongside several burgeoning companies, including one backed by Elon Musk, in the quest to develop interfaces bridging brains and computers. The name 'Merge' is inspired by a Silicon Valley notion that foresees a fusion of human and digital intelligence, a concept Sam Altman has previously expressed a keen interest in. Notably, Altman has been a backer of Musk's Neuralink, which has a $1.3 billion funding record.

Diverging from Neuralink's approach, Merge intends to avoid invasive brain implants. Their groundbreaking technology taps into neurons through molecular interactions rather than electrodes. Ultrasound will facilitate communication without implanting hardware into brain tissue, aiming to combine aspects of biology, innovative devices, and AI into a user-friendly, widely available format.

Artificial intelligence will be pivotal in Merge's development strategy. The firm plans to incorporate sophisticated AI systems capable of deciphering human intent and adapting efficiently to personal nuances, even when faced with imperfect signals. OpenAI's collaboration will be crucial in creating foundational models and cutting-edge tools to propel this innovation forward.

Another company in this domain has received $345 million and is collaborating with Nvidia, employing AI models to enhance the intuitive capabilities and diversity of brain-computer interfaces. Currently, such interfaces empower individuals with paralysis to control computers and manipulate robotic limbs, but future iterations amplified by AI could handle more intricate tasks.

Graduating from Forest Neurotech, a nonprofit entity from Los Angeles established in 2023, Merge emerges as an offshoot with roots firmly connected to its parent organization. While Forest remains non-commercial, it will support and engage in joint ventures with Merge as it progresses.

Though Merge has yet to publicize specific application targets, Forest’s research into mental health and neurological trauma suggests potential areas of interest. A compact ultrasound device designed by Forest is currently undergoing preliminary safety trials in the UK.

Most interfaces, such as those developed by Neuralink and Synchron, directly track neuron-induced electrical signals, whereas Merge’s ultrasound-based technology interprets this vital information through blood flow variations within the brain. To date, some animals have received Neuralink implants, while ten individuals have been fitted with Synchron's less invasive solution, which resides in a blood vessel adjacent to the brain rather than penetrating brain matter.

Beyond Sam Altman, Merge Labs' founding team comprises experts like Mikhail Shapiro, Tyson Aflalo, and Sumner Norman, in addition to tech innovators Alex Blania and Sandro Herbig. The company is actively recruiting talent to sustain its growth.
