My Go-To Dietitian-Approved Spritz with Just Four Ingredients
Commonly seen as a drink for sunlit days, the Aperol spritz is often shelved in colder months alongside breezy attire and beachfront activities.
Crafting the Perfect Spritz – Alcohol Optional
I prepare a simplified version using four basic components, regardless of the season. This mixture is adaptable, whether enjoying the pleasant rays of the Côte d'Azur or the rainy climate of England.
The core of this refreshing drink includes just Aperol, Prosecco, apple or cranberry juice, and soda. These can be easily swapped for nonalcoholic versions if desired.
For one drink, mix two ounces of Aperol (or an alternative), three ounces of sparkling wine, two ounces of fruit juice, and one ounce of soda water. Pour over a generous amount of ice.
To serve more guests, scale up the recipe in a punch bowl. For those who prefer a stronger flavor profile, add some spiced apple cider or increase the Aperol portion.
Enhancing with Simple Garnishes
Garnishing your drink can add personal flair: consider rosemary sprigs, cinnamon sticks, or dried orange slices. Creative ice cubes with fruit or star anise can elevate presentation.
A sugared rim using cinnamon sugar will satisfy sweet-tooth drinkers.
A Health-Conscious Choice
Dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine commends this beverage as a more hydrated and lighter option compared to most holiday concoctions.
She suggests topping up with soda to combat dehydration from alcohol. For those abstaining from alcohol, switch to nonalcoholic Aperol substitutes and maintain the rest of the flavorful spritz formula.
"It's a drink worth indulging in without feeling deprived," says Ludlam-Raine. However, she advises keeping an eye on fruit juice intake, especially during repeated servings.
