Celebrating 25 Years of Wikipedia and Its Volunteers
Marking a quarter-century since its inception on January 15, 2001, Wikipedia has transformed dramatically from a mere 100-page collection to a substantial repository of knowledge, hosting over 65 million articles that attract nearly 15 billion views per month.
In honor of this milestone, Wikimedia Foundation, the organization supporting Wikipedia, has released short video segments showcasing the efforts of eight editors worldwide. Featured in these clips is 'Hurricane Hank,' who became a member in 2005 and played a key role in documenting Hurricane Katrina. Netha, an accomplished Wikipedia editor and an Indian physician, used her expertise to disseminate accurate information during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The series also delves into Joanne from the UK, who was inspired by an Instagram post about Eloise Butler, noted for establishing the first public wildflower garden in the US, prompting her to create Butler's Wikipedia entry. Another notable contributor, Gabe, dedicates himself to ensuring the correct representation of historical Black figures on the platform. These narratives serve to humanize the vast amount of information users encounter on Wikipedia, an increasingly vital aspect in the age of artificial intelligence.
Digital Time Capsule and Global Reach
In addition to the mini-series, a digital 'time capsule' has been unveiled by the Wikimedia Foundation. This includes an audio message from Wikipedia's founder, Jimmy Wales, and revisits pivotal events like the overwhelming influx of users after the passing of Michael Jackson in 2009, which nearly led to server failures. Participants can also sign a virtual birthday card and join a live-streamed celebration event.
Wikipedia: A Resilient Repository
Despite occasional scrutiny from political figures, Wikipedia's resilience is evident, with over 1.5 billion unique devices accessing the site monthly. 'Wikipedia stands as a testament to 25 years of collective human spirit, illustrating that with cooperation and trust, extraordinary achievements are within reach,' Wales remarked in a recent statement.
