Why Moving to Austin from California Was the Best Decision I Ever Made

The remote work setup during the pandemic became the catalyst for my relocation. I grew up in Orange County, and while I cherished Laguna Niguel, it wasn't where I envisioned spending my entire life.

The city has its charms, but stepping beyond its limits reveals traffic bottlenecks and exorbitant costs.

For 13 years, I've been employed by Toshiba Business, fully remotely. My employer's green light allowed me to choose between Austin, a city I'd previously enjoyed visiting, and Nashville, another city with glowing reviews.

Having visited both cities in the summer of 2021, Austin emerged as my chosen destination.

Both Nashville and Austin offer vibrant urban experiences coupled with a touch of countryside appeal. Nashville is phenomenal, similar to Austin, with its music scene, cultural richness, and dynamic atmosphere.

What clinched my decision towards Austin was finding my gym, LA Fitness, here, allowing me to integrate seamlessly into my new life.

Starting a New Life in Austin

Spending most of my years in California, my only prior move was to San Diego for college. So the decision to permanently relocate to Austin involved a degree of apprehension.

Traveling through the night, passing through Camp Pendleton, I reached Tucson, Arizona, around 1 a.m., feeling a mixture of excitement and doubt about my new chapter.

Entering the Hill Country near Fredericksburg, I was greeted by scenic sawgrass and oak trees that ushered in a reassuring peace, convincing me I'd made the right choice.

Settling in Dripping Springs, a suburb 20 miles west of Austin, was driven by more affordable living costs compared to Southern California, combined with less congestion.

The sights outside my window include wildlife like deer, foxes, wild turkeys, and even Longhorn steers, experiences I wouldn't find in Laguna Niguel, affirming my love for nature.

Adapting to the Challenges of a New Home

Although my immediate family no longer resides in California, I deeply miss my friends from back home. Building new friendships here has posed the greatest challenge, but I'm persevering.

I've joined sports teams for volleyball, soccer, and softball, which have been great avenues for meeting new people.

Despite missing California's iconic beaches, the landlocked nature of Texas has been offset by my embracing the University of Texas Longhorns, attending their football and baseball games for my sports fix.

The Economic Landscape of Texas

Texans benefit from the absence of state income tax filings, although property taxes are notably higher. Thankfully, real estate prices are more economical here.

Despite higher property taxes, my Texan property, while double the Californian home size, was acquired at a lower price. Austin remains among Texas's more costly cities, but overall expenses, including gas, are quite manageable. My salary stayed the same post-move.

Embracing Texan Culture

Dripping Springs exhibits a unique cultural flair with its residents sporting large belt buckles and cowboy boots—a stark contrast to Orange County norms.

Downtown Austin is alive with a dynamic spirit, characterized by constant live music and the youthful energy of the University of Texas.

I am thoroughly content with my decision to live here and have every intention of making it my permanent home.
