U.S. Withdraws Personnel from Qatar Airbase Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

In light of escalating threats towards Iran, the United States has decided to remove a small contingent from its prominent Qatar airbase as a preventive strategy, a U.S. official revealed to CBS News.

This action affects Al Udeid Airbase, a pivotal installation for U.S. Central Command, responsible for the American military operations across the Middle Eastern theater. This strategic reduction comes amidst Iranian warnings of potential reprisals targeting United States troops.

In a dialogue with CBS, President Trump expressed that the U.S. might act if the Iranian regime escalates violence by executing demonstrators amid widespread protests.

Reports indicate the President has been briefed on strategies that extend beyond traditional air assaults, including cyber warfare and psychological skirmishes, as a calculated response to potential Iranian provocations.

The scaling down at Al Udeid is taking place while the President considers a range of responses, observing anticipated actions from Iran closely.

Earlier, Reuters highlighted the military's intent to lessen its presence at this critical facility.

A similar drawdown of U.S. forces occurred previously at Al Udeid around the U.S.’s targeted attacks on Iran's nuclear sites, known as Operation Midnight Hammer. That event prompted a retaliatory missile barrage from Iran, most of which was successfully intercepted, resulting in minimal damage thanks to the earlier reduction of troops.

General Dan Caine, Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, commented post-attack that the U.S. had minimized its strategic footprints across the region, with most personnel redeployed, leaving the base sparsely populated with essential staff.

Typically, Al Udeid hosts a significant number of U.S. service members, estimated between 8,000 to 10,000, making it a substantial American force hub in the Middle East.
