Setting Time Restrictions on YouTube Shorts for Kids
Parents now have the power to control the time their children spend on YouTube Shorts by setting a duration limit on their usage. This adjustable feature spans from a quick fifteen-minute session to a maximum of two hours, with a 'no time' option in the pipeline. Initiated on Wednesday, the revised Shorts time limit originally introduced by YouTube in October has been specifically revamped for accounts of users under the age of 18. Notably, young users are unable to alter these restrictions.
New Parental Control Features
In addition to time management, parents are now equipped with tools to set personalized notifications like 'Bedtime' and 'Take a break' for their children's accounts. These notifications can also be enabled by adults for their own accounts if they wish. This suite of new options comes on the heels of YouTube’s drive to better regulate and monitor accounts of users who are minors.
Further updates are on the horizon that will refine the process of assigning the correct age category when parents register new accounts for their children or teenagers. This enhancement in the YouTube sign-up page will provide more control over what content is permissible for young users.
Following Industry Trends
The introduction of these expansive parental controls mirrors the broader industry trend seen across several social media platforms. Last year, Meta implemented its own set of restrictions including a 'PG-13' content filter, while TikTok has had a similar setup in place since 2023.
