Russian Oil Company Confirms Retention of Venezuelan Holdings Post US Action
In the wake of a significant U.S. military intervention on January 3, Russia's state-owned oil firm, Roszarubezhneft, has reiterated its control over oil assets in Venezuela.
In an official statement reported by Russia's TASS news agency, Roszarubezhneft asserted, "The entirety of Roszarubezhneft JSC's assets in Venezuela remains under Russian state ownership."
Roszarubezhneft assumed control of Rosneft's Venezuelan assets in 2020 following U.S. sanctions that prompted Rosneft to retract. The company currently participates in five collaborative ventures with Venezuela's national oil entity, PDVSA.
Owned by a division of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, Roszarubezhneft confirmed on Tuesday that their acquisitions were transacted at fair market value with authorization from Venezuelan authorities.
This declaration from Roszarubezhneft coincides with looming uncertainties in Venezuela's oil industry, stemming from the recent U.S. military action, which led to the arrest of ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
Following the intervention, President Donald Trump suggested that the United States could oversee Venezuela, advocating for American investment in the country's extensive yet deteriorating oil sector.
While Russian President Vladimir Putin has not publicly addressed the operation in Venezuela, Russia and Venezuela share substantial energy connections which are vital to Russia's economic interest, as well as defense and diplomatic relations.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made calls for Maduro's release and advocates for constructive dialogue between the United States and Venezuela.
Investors are keenly observing to see if the heightened tensions will impact energy supply lines.
In recent years, global oil prices have been suppressed due to overproduction and a slowdown in demand.
Analysts indicate that geopolitical risks are escalating, particularly pulling Venezuela and renewed Iranian tensions into the spotlight.
Some experts caution that the chance of a sudden spike in oil prices, which can send ripples through global markets and economies, is increasing as geopolitical strains deepen.
