New US Armored Buggy Reaches Over 20 Drone Takedowns in Ukraine

Ukraine's defense team recently showcased their latest asset in combat against Russian drones—a nimble, missile-equipped vehicle known as the Tempest. Featured in a video from the Ukrainian Air Command, this system has reportedly successfully eliminated over twenty Shahed drones thus far.

Introducing the Tempest

Within the video released on Tuesday by the Ukrainian Air Command, audiences could see the Tempest, a specialized off-road machine designed to launch guided missiles high into the sky. A soldier, codenamed 'Shorty' for security reasons, confirmed the vehicle's impressive performance in the field.

The versatile Tempest is constructed on a four-wheel drive platform and houses dual missile launchers. These launchers are believed to be fitted with missiles akin to the AGM-114 Hellfire series, which typically rely on laser guidance but, in the Longbow configuration, use radar for autonomous targeting.

Tempest's Tactical Advantages

What sets the Tempest apart is its ability to pinpoint and neutralize targets without continuous guidance. The radar-equipped Hellfire Longbow missiles are designed to deliver powerful payloads of up to 20 pounds. Despite missing explicit identification, observers speculate these are the missiles being utilized.

V2X, the Virginia-based creators of the Tempest, have also marketed this vehicle to the U.S. military. The vehicle’s adaptability includes potential deployments as fixed or trailer-mounted systems.

Demonstrating its capability in a range of environments, the Tempest was shown maneuvering skillfully across different terrains in Ukraine, maintaining operational readiness despite challenging conditions.

Challenges and Adaptations

Facing the rapid threat posed by Shahed drones, which exceed speeds of 100 mph, Ukrainian forces require highly mobile and responsive systems like the Tempest to successfully intercept these airborne threats.

Initially, Ukrainian troops relied on traditional truck-mounted machine guns. However, due to evolving Russian tactics and an increase in drone-operated assaults, new approaches such as the Tempest have become essential.

Economic Considerations in Warfare

In the ever-evolving battle theater, cost efficiency is critical. The Hellfire missiles historically cost around $123,000 per unit, accounting for related expenses. In contrast, the production costs for Russian Shahed drones are significantly lower, estimated at $35,000 to $70,000 each.

Although precise numbers regarding the deployment and costs of Tempest operations are not disclosed, it is clear that this new system adds a critical capability to Ukraine's defense strategy against drone incursions.

Deployment in Ukraine

Evidence of the Tempest's deployment in Ukraine dates back to December, with appearances in various military footage. Ukraine often collaborates with foreign defense firms, offering them the opportunity to field-test technologies under real combat scenarios.

Besides the Tempest, Ukraine has also incorporated low-cost interceptor drones, controlled by humans, to bolster its defense. These adaptations show Ukraine's strategic approach to countering the drone threat with a combination of advanced and economical tactics.
