Layoffs at Ubisoft's Swedish Studios: Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm
Cost-Reduction Measures Lead to Job Cuts
2026 is off to a challenging start for Ubisoft, as the company schedules a second wave of staff reductions less than two weeks into the year. With job cuts looming, Ubisoft has notified employees at its Swedish subsidiaries, Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm, about a planned reorganization that could impact approximately 55 jobs across these branches.
Voluntary Buyouts and Strategic Planning
Last year, workers at Massive, known for developing major titles like The Division series, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, were offered voluntary exit packages as part of cost-management strategies. This restructuring comes on the heels of a Voluntary Leave Program concluded in the fall of 2025. Together with a refined long-term strategic plan and completed staffing assessments, Ubisoft believes these efforts have clarified the studios' needs for sustained operations and development.
Clarifying the Nature of Changes
Ubisoft emphasized that these structural adjustments are part of a broader vision for the studios and unrelated to individual performance, recent project outcomes, or the team's work quality. The intention is to prepare the studios for long-term stability rather than addressing immediate concerns.
Future Project Focus for Swedish Studios
Despite the layoffs, Ubisoft insists that the strategic goals for both studios remain steady. Massive Entertainment continues to develop anticipated projects, such as The Division 3. Meanwhile, Ubisoft Stockholm is diligently working on an unannounced new franchise, integrating the advanced Ubisoft Scalar cloud technology as per reports by Game Developer.
Broader Corporate Streamlining
Earlier in the month, Ubisoft also decided to close Ubisoft Halifax, resulting in the termination of 71 positions. This decision followed the unionization of the Virginia studio's workforce just over two weeks prior. Ubisoft attributed these events to wider corporate efforts aimed at operational efficiency across the company.
