Breaking Up and Still Traveling Solo Abroad

Breaking Up and Still Traveling Solo Abroad

After a relationship lasting over two years, my boyfriend finally voiced the question simmering between us: "Are we still embarking on this trip?"

We were set to head to the airport for our anticipated five-day excursion to Lisbon. However, a heated phone conversation that morning had me pondering if we could even tolerate each other's company on a flight, much less an overseas vacation.

Our partnership had been under strain for a while now, yet the prospect of our journey loomed near, and relinquishing it was not an option for me. Luckily, since we were traveling as standby passengers, our tickets were fully refundable.

I asked him directly, "Do you not wish to go anymore? I can annul your ticket instantly."

He agreed that traveling together wasn't wise, but I've always been fond of going it alone. We parted ways, and I retained my ticket.

From Tears to Joy: My Solo Adventure

With adrenaline coursing through me and my heart racing, the drive to the Boston airport was exhilarating yet liberating. Boarding the plane alone marked the official start of my lone sojourn.

I couldn't help shedding a few tears during the flight, but the joy I felt when landing was undeniable. Hearing "Welcome to Lisbon" from the pilot's lips filled me with pride for braving the trip on my own.

Managing the entire itinerary solo was easier than anticipated since I had already organized everything myself. The hotel booking was under my name, courtesy of my credit-card points.

Despite moments of sadness over the breakup, discovering a foreign land proved to be an excellent balm for my troubled emotions.

Solo and Happy in Lisbon

The days unfolded as I explored Lisbon's scenic spots, enjoyed sumptuous meals, savored exquisite wines, and forged bonds with newfound acquaintances.

At a café, two young women noticed my solitude and invited me to join them. We delved into deep conversations, sharing personal narratives.

The following day featured an organized tour to Sintra, a picturesque locale close to Lisbon. A friendly woman and her niece approached me, curious if I was traveling alone.

Upon learning about my recent breakup, they 'adopted' me for the day as we trekked to the vibrant Pena Palace and explored various local boutiques.

On reflection, a sense of relief shadowed the thought of enjoying the city's charms without the overcast of my precarious relationship.

Embracing the Journey Alone

Traveling solo isn't new to me; it's something I've always indulged, whether in a relationship or single. As a flight attendant, jet-setting solo suits my lifestyle perfectly.

The freedom to explore at my convenience without concerns about companions' schedules or budgets is liberating.

When sharing my solo travel adventure on social media, only those who knew the full story realized I had just exited a relationship.

Friends later praised my choice to travel alone, but for me, canceling wasn't in the cards.

Had I not already embraced solo travel, the courage to adventure to Portugal by myself might have evaded me, along with the remarkable and restorative experiences I gained.

I encourage anyone to try traveling alone at least once, as it offers unparalleled self-discovery and a solid boost in self-confidence.
