MacKenzie Scott's Generous Donation to the Trevor Project
Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has made a significant contribution of $45 million to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting LGBTQ+ youth. This generous donation comes on the heels of the organization's involvement in managing services through the federally supported 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which offers support to queer youth in distress.
Jaymes Black, the CEO of The Trevor Project, expressed deep gratitude for this donation, describing it as 'transformative.' He highlighted that this is the largest donation the organization has received in its 27-year history. Scott had previously donated during the earlier years of the Trump administration, indicating her ongoing commitment.
Since her divorce in 2019, Scott has become a highly active philanthropist, gradually increasing her charitable contributions. By 2025, it is expected she will have donated substantially to various nonprofit causes.
In a message, Black emphasized that Scott's contribution comes at a time of increased stigma and political challenges for LGBTQ+ youth, supporting the notion that these young individuals are valued and that many are dedicated to ensuring their safety and well-being.
Statistics on LGBTQ+ youth mental health in the United States reveal a stark reality; approximately 45% of individuals aged 13 to 24 in this community have contemplated suicide. The Trevor Project's mission is to support those who are particularly vulnerable.
Following the 2024 election of Trump, The Trevor Project experienced a notable rise in requests for support via calls, chats, and texts—a 33% increase was observed post-inauguration last year, along with heightened engagement during events like the case ruling concerning gender-affirming care for minors.
Black regards Scott’s endowment as a crucial step towards enhancing the organization's longevity and capability to offer more extensive services to LGBTQ+ youth. This strategic move aims to continuously adapt to the growing needs of these young individuals worldwide.
Looking ahead, the organization plans to carefully chart an investment strategy focusing on strengthening core crisis services, ensuring financial sustainability, and progressing towards a global environment where every LGBTQ+ young person is acknowledged and supported.
Apart from this notable contribution, Scott has also awarded funds to various causes, such as environmental conservation and public education initiatives.
