How My Father’s Support Led Me to Tattooing My Family

Art has always been a central part of my life, and while some might have considered me a non-conformist in my teenage years, my father saw potential. He did nothing but encourage my inclination towards art, fervently supporting my aspirations to turn my passion into a profession.

Embarking on the Tattoo Journey

At the age of 16, tattoo artistry piqued my interest, although I hesitated to see it as a career option because of my uncertainty and fear. The thought of venturing into cosmetology was fleetingly considered, but my dad dismissed it with encouragement, reminding me that I belonged in the world of tattoos, not hair. He urged me not to abandon my dreams.

When I reached 18, I had my first tattoo experience. My father, unlike many parents, was enthusiastic, sharing a picture of it on Instagram. Seeing my excitement, I knew I had to learn and dive deeper into this field. Consequently, I seized the chance to be an apprentice right where I received my first tattoo, in an environment that was both inspiring and welcoming.

Three years into honing my craft, I finally felt confident enough to extend my skills to my family. I asked my dad and stepmom if they were up for personal tattoos. My father chose a daruma doll as his design, while my stepmom opted for a representation celebrating her career as a nurse.

A Heartfelt Family Project

This Christmas, instead of traveling home, I invited my dad, stepmom, stepsister, step-aunt, and her partner to visit us in Missoula, where my partner and I live. On December 26, with my studio doors open early, I offered each family member a personalized tattoo, a special gift from me to them, reflecting their individuality and what mattered most to them.

The day was more than just tattooing; it was about connection. Sitting in the chair, my family members shared pieces of their lives and what they cherished through their design choices. We conversed, creating memories far richer than any store-bought present could provide.

Meaning Beyond Material

Tattooing my family offered me insights and allowed me to bridge gaps, spending meaningful time with relatives I don't normally see. It afforded personal moments that aren’t possible at traditional large family gatherings. These tattoos became a symbol of our shared moments and deeper understanding.

Inviting loved ones into my tattoo studio dispelled myths around tattoo spaces being exclusive to a certain stereotype. Here, they discovered it as a welcoming space for anyone and everyone, making the experience inclusive and relatable.

Post-tattoo, enthusiasm was contagious—my dad was brimming with pride, and my family couldn't stop admiring their new body art. This experience affirmed my intention to offer such thoughtful gifts again in the future, often the most precious I can give.
