Embracing a New Role at 84: My Journey of Sacrifice and Support
Throughout my life, the one constant has been caring for my family. I have seven children spread across the globe: one lives in Australia, three are in California, another in Hawaii, one resides in Ohio, and the last one is here in Florida with me.
My family story began with my first husband, with whom I had four children. My second relationship, a common-law marriage, blessed me with three more. Together, we built a home, but once our paths diverged, I found myself grappling with the sudden change.
During our time together, he took care of all financial matters, while I managed household expenses through a modest income from selling art. When he left, he left the house to me, which provided a sense of stability.
A New Beginning Through Property Investments
After separating, I was able to purchase a new home, although it was too large for my needs. I ventured into the real estate market, buying and selling properties, gradually earning more—a strategy now known as flipping. This allowed me to sustain my lifestyle comfortably, absent of luxury cravings like gold or designer clothes.
I later designed a quaint, one-level dwelling perfectly suited for me, equipped with four solar panels as I embraced energy efficiency.
From Art to Design: Navigating Career Changes
Never one to chase wealth, I've always believed financial disputes are a root cause of human strife. To me, happiness holds greater value than any material possession.
My artistic inclination led me back to academia, where I obtained a degree in graphic design, which was a practical extension of my artistic skills. I entered the digital world, securing a position as a graphic designer, and remained in the field into my 50s.
Adapting to Simplicity in Later Years
My lifestyle has always been marked by its frugality, driven by my passion for environmental conservation. Eventually, maintaining five acres of farmland became overwhelming, prompting me to sell.
In retirement, I actively participated as chair of the Sierra Club, engaging in community and preservation activities and establishing a routine of weekly kayaking with friends—an affordable and enriching experience.
Joining My Son in a Professional Role
Recently, I relocated to a community near Jacksonville to be closer to my son. Although it’s more developed than where I was before, it’s an adjustment I’m still navigating.
My son, an attorney, and his wife, also in the legal profession, are parents to three children. About five years ago, he offered me a position assisting with mail duties after my retirement, a task I could perform from home.
Our bond tightened when my son’s father left. He was just 15, and we faced the world together. Graphic design supported his educational journey, and he independently pursued a law degree.
A New Routine and Connection
Now at 84, the prospect of my son ensuring I’m well looked after in my senior years is comforting. Moving closer means more frequent hugs from my five-year-old granddaughter, which makes this transition worthwhile.
Typically, I begin my day by accessing nightly reports from the sheriff’s department, listing individuals recently booked, many for DUI offenses. My role involves preparing correspondence from my son for these individuals, offering legal services, which I send before the post office closes.
Maintaining Vitality Through Work
Despite my willingness to occasionally work for free, the job keeps me mentally active and physically engaged. I've become accustomed to working around 20 hours weekly, which fits well with my desire to balance work and creativity.
While I currently have few friends, I look forward to rebuilding a social life within my new community, akin to the active connection I shared with friends at art galleries in my previous neighborhood.
Living rent-free in a property my son owns, my responsibilities are limited to covering utilities and hiring someone to maintain the property’s exterior. My combined income from Social Security and my son's financial support keeps me afloat below the poverty line, yet secure.
Reflections and Looking to the Future
Though slowing down with age, including dealing with health hiccups like a wrist injury, I maintain my overall health by adhering to medical advice without enduring unnecessary exertion.
Appearance-wise, people often mistake me for much younger, and I continue to care for myself with the goal of reaching a century, inspired by my mother’s long life.
Uncertain about my future endeavors, I am evaluating my surroundings to determine a suitable path. The potential for part-time commitment seems comfortable, combining creativity and possibly entrepreneurship, as long as my energy supports it. This phase feels reminiscent of embarking on a new venture, much like graduating college once did.
