Our Family of Four Downsized by Moving to a Small Town: More Togetherness, Less Spending

In 2017, my spouse and I moved our family of four from the bustling city of Calgary to the quaint locale of Nelson, British Columbia. Downsizing wasn't intentional but happened naturally.

We didn't check boxes on a to-do list to reduce our possessions or cut costs. Instead, we chose relocation for familial harmony, and it incidentally curbed our consumption habits that were once unsustainable.

Reflecting on it, the dramatic change wasn't just in material reduction but in how our family bonds and spends quality time.

Pre-Move: A Lifestyle Full Yet Unfulfilling

Before our relocation, life was packed with commitments that weren't necessarily enriching. Our weekends were typically filled with shopping errands, costly kids' activities, and frequent dining out as a reprieve from hectic workweeks.

Roaming aimlessly through vast retail outlets or sheltering in malls during Alberta's harsh weather was routine. We ate out often, too exhausted from lengthy commutes and work.

Though it seemed normal, our lives centered around constant consumption, leaving us feeling like separate entities crossing paths instead of a truly connected family.

A Shift to Simplicity Post-Move

Our move led to a slower, simpler lifestyle. In Nelson, the lack of endless shopping options and expensive entertainment meant less pressure to constantly spend and do.

Our smaller home prompted us to shed impractical items like bulky furniture. We broke free from habitual purchasing as the need and opportunity dwindled.

Surprisingly, we didn't miss any of it. We stopped using stores as boredom cures or opting for takeout as a norm. Weekend activities shifted from paid events to spontaneous enjoyment without the conscious aim of being virtuous.

Transforming Family Time

Family activities now focus on cost-free pleasures. We embark on morning hikes, cycle by serene lakes, prepare meals together, and enjoy our backyard instead of rushing to organized activities.

Our children rarely request new 'things'. They prefer 'doing'—spending downtime outdoors, engaging in games, or welcoming friends over. Boredom is greeted not with purchases but with creativity or shared relaxation.

Weekends have evolved into times of shared experiences rather than logistical exercises, which we greatly treasure.

Benefits Beyond Expectations

While downsizing didn't miraculously boost happiness or eliminate all issues, it redefined our daily living. Our choices about time and space are more intentional and reflect our true desires as a family.

This newfound presence has enhanced our connections, allotting us space to appreciate essential aspects of our lives without interruptions from clutter, plans, or unnecessary noise.
