Amazon's Ambitious Supercenter Plans Near Chicago

In an era of reinventing its physical retail strategy, Amazon is gearing up to open a massive supercenter spanning over 229,000 square feet in Orland Park, near Chicago. This bold move mimics the extensive layouts of Walmart's supercenters.

Approval for this significant project was granted by the Orland Park Plan Commission, which voted 6-1 in favor of transforming 35 acres into this expansive retail space.

Retail and Fulfillment Combined

The new structure is envisioned to function both as a traditional supercenter and as an Amazon distribution hub. It will stock groceries, everyday items, and ready-made meals while featuring a back-end warehouse for order fulfillment. Customers can conveniently pick up their Amazon orders on-site, offering enhanced accessibility.

Amazon's Retail Evolution

This proposed supercenter aligns with Amazon's ongoing exploration into brick-and-mortar spaces, a journey that has seen significant shifts over recent years. The e-commerce giant closed all its bookstores, 4-star shops, and pop-up outlets by 2022 while shutting down both of its cashier-less Amazon Go locations by 2023.

While Whole Foods has been a major focal point since its 2017 acquisition, Amazon shows it hasn't abandoned ambitions for standalone physical stores with this new project.
