Transitioning to a New York City Life with Family Nearby
Our homes often have distinctive scents that go unnoticed until we are away. For years, despite visitors often commenting on it, I couldn’t pinpoint the aroma of my childhood home until I had left it behind.
In my family, I am the eldest of three sisters, nurtured by loving parents and supported by engaged grandparents. With their unwavering support, my family has been my foundation, standing beside me through significant life events like my first Pride parade during my high school years and making lengthy six-hour trips to help me settle into college.
When the opportunity arose for me to follow my dreams to New York City, I knew my family had my back, but leaving them did not come any easier because of it.
From an early age, influenced by a lineage filled with ambition, I always envisioned myself taking on New York as soon as I could. In the spirit of my parents, who created their life together in the city, my formative memories, from birthday trips to college summers working in Brooklyn, culminated in my dream job offer as a sex educator in New York.
Driven by my goal, I was firm in my decision to move, yet the anticipation of reshaping my immediate familial connections was daunting. Despite the proximity of my family, just a car ride away, the thought of missing those cherished family walks with our dog or late-night sister chats made me ponder what lay ahead.
In this new chapter, a shift was marked by fortuitous circumstances when my college best friends, Elliot and Ike, settled into an apartment close to mine, paving the way for this new feeling of home.
Creating New Rhythms and Connections
The initial phase of my New York journey had me exploring connections within my new community. Although Elliot and I were mere steps apart, unlike our college living arrangement, it spurred new traditions of ocean documentary marathons and leisurely park picnics.
Life took another turn as my girlfriend entered the picture, and before long, we shared a home near my friends. This budding familial feeling was reinforced by familiar sounds anew, like the jingle of her keys or the flutter of our cats about the apartment.
Settling into this warmth, it seemed life couldn’t get sweeter.
Unexpected Happenings Bring Family Close
After settling into life with my girlfriend, an incredible situation arose—two stunning apartments in our complex opened up. As fate would have it, this aligned perfectly with my friends’ hunt for a new place and my sister and her partner choosing to live together. Within a few months, our New York corner transformed into a vibrant, queer family enclave without the wait for holidays to dine or mingle.
This migration taught me family can flourish wherever you find yourself, and for me, it’s next door. Daily activities like grocery shopping turned into bonding with my sister, and borrowing kitchenware simply meant a casual stroll in pajamas to a friend’s place.
While this idyllic living situation may one day alter, and we may venture elsewhere, it carries even more meaning due to its likely temporary nature. When that day comes, I will carry with me the joyous memories of my sister’s studio’s herbal aroma or the sweet vanilla essence of my friend’s home, always cherishing the friends, family, and neighbors I have here.
