When ChatGPT was introduced towards the end of 2022, New York City's school district, the largest in the nation, immediately raised alarms. They argued that the introduction of ChatGPT could hinder students' educational progress due to concerns over the platform's accuracy and security.
Meanwhile, across the Hudson River, a private institution in Jersey City, New Jersey, decided to embrace AI wholeheartedly as part of its educational approach. This decision was made to bolster both teacher capabilities and student engagement without replacing human instructors.
The head of Franklin School, Will Campbell, expressed a desire to integrate AI in a way that would complement teachers' roles by giving them more capacity to focus on students. Custom chatbots developed for coursework allowed for enhanced tutoring functions, freeing teachers to concentrate on broader educational support.
At universities, similar outlooks have been adopted. Ethan Mollick, a professor at the Wharton School, included the use of AI in his curriculum guidelines as early as January 2023, signaling a shift towards recognizing AI's potential as a teaching enhancement.
Mollick has since been a vocal advocate for incorporating AI into educational paradigms, citing its untapped potential to address significant educational challenges and enhance learning experiences.
Confronting the Tutoring Gap
