Seeking Tranquility: Moving from Milan to Urbino
Crossing the bustling streets near my Milan apartment, tears welled up in my eyes. A mix of sorrow, isolation, and despair flooded my mind.
This emotional turmoil was far from my expectations for my first year at university.
In the preceding spring, I had meticulously considered my future path, delving into course options, costs, and the dynamics of a new city life. My passion for writing and aspiration to enter journalism steered me towards a communication degree. I intended to enroll at an esteemed private institution in Milan, with its captivating course offerings and the allure of vibrant city life.
However, it gradually became evident that my decision might have been misguided.
Despite the interesting course material, an unsettled atmosphere persisted due to unpredictable schedule shifts and disorganized teaching. It didn't suit my learning style.
Moreover, I became increasingly concerned about the financial burden on my parents. Although they reassured me about their ability to support my education and its value, the steep fees and high living expenses weighed heavily on my conscience.
Living in Milan was initially a dream; its cultural richness, events, and dynamic nightlife were appealing. But the city's relentless pace soon became overwhelming, leaving me feeling uneasy.
During those early months, finding suitable housing was a daunting task, leading me to share a small living space in a noisy area, which severely disrupted my sleep.
By October, feelings of distress were commonplace, and daily calls to my mother revealed my discontent and uncertainty about my direction. That's when a pivotal idea struck me.
Embracing Change: Urbino's Allure
That summer, I made the decision to transfer to the University of Urbino. This charming town, with its calmer lifestyle and affordable living, was not far from my familial roots in San Marino, making it an attractive choice.
Study commitments reduced to merely three days each week, relieving the pressure to immediately find accommodation. Commencing my studies by commuting from home proved manageable at first.
I eventually secured a delightful single room, conveniently close to the university, enhancing my daily routine with an enjoyable walk through Urbino’s historical beauty.
The financial relief of Urbino's affordable tuition and living costs, compared to Milan, was significant. With this new flexibility and saved funds, I enrolled in fitness classes and a mindfulness program, experiencing an uplift in my well-being.
Regrettably, my time enjoying Urbino's benefits was cut short by the onset of COVID-19, transitioning my education to a virtual format and prompting a return home.
Reflecting on those few months, they were a highlight of my early 20s. The resolve to seek change in the face of dissatisfaction remains a valuable lesson I continue to uphold.
