Forget Perfect Holidays: Embracing Midnight Christmas with a Pilot Husband

Society often expects women to orchestrate flawless holiday experiences for their families. Nonetheless, I've come to realize that my childhood's steady traditions wouldn't be easily replicated due to my husband's career as a pilot. I've since embraced crafting memorable occasions amidst his unpredictable holiday flights.

Planning holidays around my husband’s flight itinerary never resulted in perfect holidays. There were moments of tears and difficult years, yet each challenging year has become a cherished memory, forever etched in our family history.

The Uncertainty of Life with a Pilot Husband

My childhood was filled with unwavering Christmas traditions. Christmas Eve dinners with my grandparents, gift exchanges, and my great-grandmother playing the piano were the norm. After struggling to fall asleep, I'd wake to a treasure trove of presents to open before we drove to my other grandparents' for more gifts and festivities. These rituals were as predictable as clockwork.

I was aware that marrying a pilot meant holidays would be dogged by his work schedule. However, understanding this intellectually was a far cry from living it. I lamented the loss of my childhood holiday rituals and mourned that my children wouldn't have that same experience. Realizing I couldn't recreate these consistent traditions forced me to focus on inventing meaningful and joyous experiences, no matter the date.

Reimagining Holidays: Finding Joy in the Unusual

One Christmas while my husband was airborne, the kids and I transformed Christmas morning into a creative art session at a local diner. We drew festive pictures for my grandmother living in an assisted living facility, bundled up our artwork, gathered some holiday treats, and orchestrated a surprise visit. Although we had already exchanged gifts, this visit took on a special importance because she was alone, with fading memories in the absence of my late grandfather. Her joy upon our arrival made it a moment I'll cherish endlessly.

That unconventional Christmas morning illuminated an essential truth: this wasn't just about adapting or giving in. What my children experienced each year was a unique joy, a departure from my own upbringing. That morning at the diner, I discovered an opportunity: the chance to gift my children memorable and distinct celebrations each year.

The subsequent holiday season proved even more challenging with my husband scheduled to fly throughout Christmas Eve and Day, as well as the days following. We made a decision to celebrate Christmas on December 28th, a prospect initially met with disappointment from the kids who had been counting down to the 25th. Fortuitously, a schedule shakeup allowed him to make it home at midnight; we seized the moment by waking the children to unwrap gifts before he returned to the skies the next morning.

As the children matured, eagerly awaiting their father’s flight details became a tradition in itself as we adjusted our celebrations accordingly. One year, it led to an impromptu cruise followed by a gift exchange before sending him off on his Christmas flights.

On another occasion, his layover was close enough to us to drive over with gifts in tow. We spent the day indulging in a family movie, dining out, and sharing presents before parting ways.

This year's holiday represents the finale of his flying career as he looks forward to retirement next year. While future holidays will have his constant presence, our celebrations will forever retain their unique flair, forged over years dictated by flight schedules.
