Interstellar Voyager Makes a Brief Visit Near Earth This Week

An object from a distant star system is making a fleeting journey near our planet this week, offering one last spectacle before it rushes back to the vastness of interstellar space.

First spotted during the summer season, this comet will approach within 167 million miles (around 269 million kilometers) of Earth on Friday, marking its closest point during its exploration of our solar neighborhood.

NASA is persistently directing its space telescopes towards this icy traveler, whose size is estimated to range from approximately 1,444 feet to 3.5 miles. This celestial body is diminishing in brightness as it travels away, so this moment presents an opportunity for amateur astronomers to view it from their backyards using telescopes.

The comet is expected to draw significantly nearer to Jupiter by March, closing the gap to just 33 million miles. It is anticipated to depart for interstellar space by the mid-2030s, never to revisit these parts, according to Paul Chodas, who leads NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies.

This is the third recognized interstellar object to grace our solar system. Comets such as 3I/Atlas originate from other star systems within the Milky Way, contrasting with local comets like Halley's, which originate from the outer edges of our solar system.

The inaugural confirmed interstellar object was discovered by a telescope in Hawaii. Subsequently, two years later, a Crimean amateur astronomer identified an interstellar comet. Comet 3I/Atlas was detected in July by NASA’s Atlas telescope in Chile, as it scanned the skies for hazardous asteroids.

Scientists suggest that this latest interstellar visitor, which poses no threat, might have come from a star system predating our own, making it an intriguing subject for study.

NASA has shared multiple images of 3I/Atlas, displaying its journey through space from about 180 million miles away from Earth.

In a series of images captured in October, the comet appears as a luminous white spot, seemingly in motion against the distant stellar backdrop, at a distance of approximately 18,641,135 miles from Mars.

During September, an image depicted 3I/ATLAS streaking through our solar system.

Harvard scientist Ari Loeb, who has previously noted unusual objects, suggested that the comet might have extraterrestrial origins.

"Until we gather definitive data, we should consider every possibility, be it a comet, a rock, or something else," Loeb commented in an interview with CBS Boston.
