Managing Life with Childcare Costs in Different Timezones
Facing the high expense of after-school care in New York City, my husband and I adopted an unusual lifestyle. Our family has adapted to living on separate coasts to accommodate both our son's educational needs and our career aspirations.
Initial Relocation Decisions
Originally relocating from New York City to the Bay Area in 2020 for my husband's career, we envisioned a promising chapter ahead. I'm passionate about my dual roles as a writer and a college writing professor, while my husband thrives as a computational designer. Last fall, as his project was nearing completion, he received a promising offer in New York, which prompted us to consider moving back.
Facing Challenges with School Schedules
Upon contemplating a return to New York, we carefully planned around our child’s school schedule. My husband would work close by our son's school for easy drop-offs, and I tailored my teaching schedule to manage pickups. We also engaged a babysitter for occasional late stays, allowing us some time together.
However, our strategy encountered a hurdle when my husband discovered his expected work site might not be operational immediately, forcing a long commute. This unexpected change dismantled the flexible schedule we counted on.
Financial Strains and Parenthood
With a focused spend on living arrangements near the school, stretching our budget for additional childcare wasn't feasible. The challenge was compounded by having to accommodate work and unexpected sick days, with added pressures on myself to manage these commitments.
Thriving on Opposite Coasts
Realizing the strain these challenges could place on our family, we opted to reside on separate coasts, at least for the time being. My husband secured more affordable housing while I remained in the Bay Area, creating an environment more suited to our son's routine.
His partially remote work setup allows him to visit us monthly, making him available for crucial family moments and maintaining our household systems. Prepping meals and running errands during these visits also helps maintain household stability.
Maintaining Emotional Connections
Despite the geographic separation, we have found ways to stay intimately connected as a family. Regular FaceTime calls around meal times ensure daily updates, while reading the same book as a family fosters shared experiences. Our routine also includes weekly catch-up sessions just for the two of us.
Our current lifestyle, although unconventional and temporary, has allowed us to manage both professional and parental responsibilities under challenging circumstances.
