High Cost of After-School Programs: A Decision I Don't Regret

In 2020, amid my divorce, my ex-spouse and I negotiated the expenses of our children's after-school activities. My son was entering the third grade, and my daughter was just starting kindergarten. The mere idea of them being home alone after school was enough to cause me severe anxiety. Thus, I pushed hard to incorporate the specifics of after-school care into our divorce agreement.

During the height of the pandemic, as schools transitioned to virtual learning, I temporarily forgot about after-school programs. It was only when in-person classes resumed that I felt the weight of the financial commitments anew.

Readjusting to My New Life

I was transitioning into a communications role while balancing new financial responsibilities as a recently divorced individual—rent, car payments, insurance, among others. The unforeseen costs of after-school care added to an already tight budget.

Enrolling my children in the school's sole available program in Houston became a necessity, though at $400 per child monthly, exclusive of registration fees, it was no small expense.

Despite the cost, the program ensured my children were in a secure environment—surrounded by friends and under familiar supervision—which eliminated some co-parenting complexities.

The Assurance of a Set Routine

Even while working from home intermittently, the program was integral to my peace of mind. Whether it was meeting work obligations or handling personal errands, knowing my children had a place to go was a relief.

Not every family can rely on a network of support like babysitters or extended family for after-school assistance.

Navigating Competitive Enrollments

Villains of location, after-school program options are often scarce, with enrollments filled on first-come or lottery systems, months ahead of the academic year. This makes planning increasingly challenging.

Having laid down specific conditions in our divorce agreement for our children's after-school care, from cost-sharing to maintaining enrollment strategies, proved crucial.

Comparatively, after-school care fees vary widely by region. Previously living in New York's Upper East Side, I discovered programs cost between $750 and $900 per semester, whereas, near Syracuse, the cost is much less at $116 weekly for all weekdays.

Years of after-school care have left me with considerable debt, yet I stand by those choices for the benefits they provided to my children.
