A Parenting Strategy That Endures: Creating Email Accounts for Newborns
Most new parents are occupied with choosing the perfect name, establishing a sleep schedule, and stocking up on essentials like diapers. However, as a mother of two, I embarked on a unique project: establishing email accounts for my children and chronicling messages to them long before they could even read a word. This digital archive is something I believe they'll appreciate in the future.
Cementing their email addresses was practical since it preserved their names in an ever-busy digital world. But far more importantly, it created a meaningful legacy. Having counseled families experiencing illness and loss, I've witnessed how much children value tokens and words that encapsulate relationships.
Parents often turn to creating memories and channels for communication when they're reminded how fragile life can be. This insight greatly influences my parenting style: preparing ahead rather than reacting to life's uncertainties.
Crafting Messages for My Kids
The process is wholly personal. I typically write:
Birthdays and Anniversaries
Each birthday, I pen a note. Some years, it's a detailed account; others, just a few heartfelt lines.
This year's message is: "You're three today! You picked a Minnie Mouse theme with green hues. You're vivacious, expressive, and delight in dancing. Watching you grow is a joy, and your morning smiles are my favorite way to start the day."
I jot down memories as they happen, capturing small but significant moments—the unique phrases my children use or special shared events. Often I begin with, "Things to remember…" or "The way you…"
In one email, I wrote: "I cherish how you call your Chicago Bears blanket your 'gummy bear blanket.'"
Once my daughter pronounces it correctly, I'll yearn for the misnomer, marking her rapid development. These intimate glimpses preserve what is extraordinary in everyday moments, sometimes alongside a cherished photo.
Parenthood isn't solely about the highs. I write candidly during challenging times. It provides me with clarity and conveys to my kids that struggle is part of life's tapestry.
Recently, I reflected: "Your bold spirit tests my patience lately, but I remind myself it will drive you to greatness. Your determination and resilience will be admirable. At night, I tell you how deeply I care. Even when it's tough, it's immensely rewarding. I hope you feel this bond, too."
When to Present This Digital Diary
Contemplating the right time to share these emails, I imagine doing so on significant birthdays like an 18th or during pivotal life changes, such as graduation.
My desire is to witness my children becoming adults who may one day care for me. These emails stem from love, a tool to encase our shared joy and memories, not as a reaction to fear.
Should tragedy alter our path, these messages offer a repository of affirmation—assuring them of their constant presence in my thoughts and heart.
Whenever they access these emails, my enduring affection and the stories of our life together will accompany them.
Initiating the Process
Establish a basic email for your child. Whether they’re a newborn or already in classes, any time is a good time to begin.
Start with a heartfelt note. Illustrate their current personality, hobbies, and quirks. Share the qualities you admire and your dreams for their future.
Set reminders around birthdays, holidays, and milestones to maintain consistency.
Focus on sincerity over perfection. Authenticity is valuable, and this exercise is a meaningful gift. Eventually, this legacy will belong to your child.
