Ohio School Pioneers Open Discussions for Teen Boys to Address Personal Challenges

Johnny Cole, who initiated the Hey Brother program, together with David Reese, a language arts teacher at Oberlin High School, gathers a group of high school boys bi-weekly. They engage in dialogues and teachings regarding what it means to be a man in today’s society, within their initiative known as Men's Work.

Cole points out that boys often experience a tumultuous emotional journey, hearing from the media that men should freely express their emotions but not finding role models who exhibit such behavior. This contradiction often leaves them at a loss for how to express themselves.

A report released earlier in the year by the Pew Research Center highlights that just 38% of teenage boys feel at ease discussing their mental well-being with peers, a stark contrast to the 58% represented by their female counterparts.

The study also reveals that 43% of young males reckon with societal pressures to maintain physical strength. This concern partially explains the appeal of online personas collectively referred to as the 'manosphere,' which caters predominantly to males.

Men's Work specifically addresses and questions these messages from the 'manosphere,' which have become familiar to students like Santos Navarro, a senior deeply engaged with online content.

Navarro comments on the prevalent narrative among influencers encouraging excessive fitness regimes, including steroid use, which concerns individuals of his age group.

A 2023 study by the American Psychological Association found that those who cut their social media use by half experienced noticeable improvements in self-perception regarding weight and appearance.

Reese highlights the genuine nature of the struggle young boys feel, which is compounded by appealing personas in the 'manosphere' who seemingly have everything figured out. The aim is to provide a positive, supportive alternative to help navigate these complex emotions.
