Des Moines Superintendent's Detention by ICE

The head of schools in Des Moines has been apprehended by agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE Statement on Ian Roberts

According to ICE, Ian Roberts entered the United States from Guyana on a student visa back in 1999. He allegedly remained illegally after his visa expired and continued serving as the superintendent without valid work authorization.

Officials from ICE mentioned that a court-pending removal order had been issued by a judge for Roberts in May 2024.

The Arrest and Its Circumstances

During an intended capture by ICE officers, Roberts reportedly attempted to escape by driving away. His vehicle was subsequently found deserted.

Authorities, with assistance from the police, eventually located Roberts. Upon his arrest, he was found carrying a loaded firearm, a hunting knife, and cash amounting to $3,000.

School District's Response

Officials from the school district released a statement noting that they didn't have specified plans for moving forward concerning Roberts’ position.

Context of Previous Legal Issues

Earlier in February 2020, Roberts faced charges related to possessing weapons, as indicated by ICE.
