The Enduring Impact of a Counselor's Act of Kindness

Navigating his teenage years was challenging for Patrick Furlong. His parents separated when he was just 13, and his father relocated far away.

In 2000, as a 15-year-old, Patrick faced a small but significant challenge while preparing for a school event requiring formal attire and a tie, an accessory with which he wasn't familiar.

Patrick recounted, "I found myself in front of the mirror, repeatedly attempting to tie it, yet failing each time."

He described the tears of frustration that came from a deeper place of emotional distress, intensified by his family's situation.

With the tie stuffed in his pocket, Patrick headed to the event. There, he was greeted by Clyde Archibeque, the school's guidance counselor.

In their small school, Archibeque was aware of Patrick’s troubles at home. He discreetly offered his assistance.

Patrick shared, "Once we were alone, he simply asked about the tie. I couldn’t hold back my tears any longer."

With a comforting smile, Archibeque deftly tied the knot for Patrick and reassured him with the words, 'We'll be fine.' And indeed, they were.

Reflections on a Mirror Image

Fast forward 23 years, as Patrick's son prepared for his first communion, he called out from the bathroom, seeking help with his tie.

Tying his son’s tie took Patrick back to his own adolescence, recalling the kindness of Mr. Archibeque amidst the green wallpaper and bright lights of his high school bathroom.

Patrick mused about how profound it was to have been alone in that past moment, now able to assist his child with an experience he lacked with his own father.

A Vision of Connection

Later that evening, as Patrick contemplated his own fatherly experience, he was enveloped in a vision.

"In my mind, I was back with my son in the bathroom," he said, picturing Mr. Archibeque right there with him.

Imagining a supportive hand on his shoulder, he looked into his son's eyes, and then at Mr. Archibeque’s smiling eyes, hearing the comforting assurance once more.

Patrick Furlong and his family celebrated his son's communion in 2023, a moment filled with personal significance.

Continuing the Legacy of Compassion

Now a mentor at Loyola Marymount University, Patrick extends similar compassion by guiding students interested in community and social justice.

In his role, Patrick facilitates discussions on personal growth, reminiscent of a guidance counselor, but at the collegiate level.

The memory of Archibeque’s caring gesture serves as an inspiration, driving Patrick to create meaningful connections in the lives of his students.

Reflecting on this significant moment from his past, he expressed a heartfelt thanks to Archibeque, hoping that somewhere his gratitude was heard: "Mr. Archibeque, thank you—your impact was greater than you could ever know."
