Unforeseen Alert at My Daughter's University: How Do Parents Cope?

My daughter, a student at Auburn University, received a concerning notification from her school, which sent me into a state of distress.

The university announced a potential threat, and armed law enforcement officers were present on campus grounds. Thankfully, the situation was later identified as a false alarm, and I couldn't be prouder of my 22-year-old for handling it so well.

An Unexpected Message

While parked at Target on August 27th at 6:06 p.m. ET, my phone buzzed with a message that made my heart race: an AU Alert from Auburn University, where my eldest studies. The alert said, 'Significant police presence at RBD Library. Stay away from the vicinity.' This unsettling message brought back haunting memories of that morning's tragic school shooting in Minneapolis, where a woman's barefoot run toward Annunciation School left a lasting impression on me.

Over 900 miles separated us, and I was helpless to physically be there for my daughter. My thoughts were consumed with worry about Sophie's whereabouts and class schedule that day. In a moment of increasing anxiety, I received a text from her, 'Anything on the news about Auburn right now? We just received a notice about officers at RBD.'

Coping with the Confusion

I assured her I received the alert, too, as uncertainty and mixed messages circulated on platforms like YikYak. We promised to monitor the news and update her. She was in her apartment, prepping to head to class, but didn’t feel secure venturing out.

Internally, every instinct screamed for her to stay indoors, though I knew maintaining composure was crucial. I urged her confidence in making a wise decision, advising her to communicate with professors and classmates, 'Trust your judgment, sweetheart.'

Real-Time Communication

In our exchanges, we discussed the spate of false school shooter reports at several universities, such as Villanova during move-in. She wasn't aware of these incidents or the tragic events from earlier that day. My daughter sent a brief video depicting officers clad in tactical gear and carrying rifles scouring the RBD Library. The surreal sight of a student casually descending the stairs amid this scene was stark.

My daughter, although calm and rational in potential crisis settings, texted, 'Probably nothing, yet can't be sure.' Her conversations with friends reflected caution rather than panic, a testament to their maturity.

A Sigh of Relief

By 6:52 p.m., a text from my daughter relayed, 'All clear here.' Simultaneously, an Auburn Alert confirmed the threat as baseless: 'FALSE ALARM. Police addressed a fabricated report regarding campus security. No present danger was confirmed.'

Navigating Parenthood Without a Guide

The false alarm had me frozen in my car for over 45 minutes; my life was momentarily suspended until I knew she was safe. Entering the store later brought a mix of relief and contemplation about how events might have gone differently if it were a real threat. Thoughts of other parents eagerly waiting in distress to reunite with their children in Minneapolis crossed my mind, highlighting how unprepared we are for such occurrences.

I've always encouraged my children to live with mindfulness rather than apprehension—a lesson reinforced by this experience, our first encounter with such an alert. It underscores the crucial role parents play in either instilling fear or fostering empowerment in their offspring. Yet, despite the ordeal, I fervently hope neither of us faces this scenario again.
