Innovative Approaches Foster Student Success Amid L.A. School's Wildfire Destruction

Amidst the aftermath of devastating fires, a Los Angeles area school refuses to let adversity halt student progress. Despite losing their school building, they have developed creative solutions to keep students engaged.

Shawn Brown launched the Pasadena Rosebud Academy Charter School in Altadena back in 2007, aiming to offer valuable educational opportunities such as critical reasoning and financial skills to local pupils.

Although facing personal loss with the destruction of her home, Brown is dedicating herself to ensuring students continue their education during this challenging time.

Brown reflected, "There hasn't been time to process the loss. From discovering both my house and school burned, my immediate focus became organizing the next steps for the students."

In the wake of the Eaton Fire, which claimed 17 lives and left the school in ruins, Brown and her team swiftly devised an action plan.

Adapting Educational Methods

"We opted for field trips during the first week," Brown explained. "Since one of our core values is providing exposure, we aim to broaden students' horizons beyond their immediate environment. Travel opens up bigger dreams."

Their itinerary included a trip to the California Science Center.

Following these excursions, there was still a need to find a suitable venue for regular classes.

Brown noted, "While students comprehend the loss, what truly matters is understanding that our school community remains intact."

After an extensive search, a provisional solution emerged. Students gathered and were transported to their temporary classroom location.

Temporary New Home

Upon arriving at The Beehive in South Los Angeles, students expressed excitement about their new learning environment.

Brown described, "This high-tech facility caters to Black and Brown students, enhancing their exposure to tech fields, inspiring confidence in breaking into such careers." Staff worked tirelessly to repurpose studio areas into classrooms.

They procured essential supplies like desks and chairs, yet this arrangement is temporary, with another move expected soon.

Community Resilience

Besides the school building, some families, including students, are contending with the loss of their homes.

Amber Trejo, mother to kindergartner Caira, shared, "I prefer she sees this phase as a special break. Coping with emotions has been challenging." Their own family home succumbed to the blaze, affecting multiple generations.

Trejo conveyed hope, "We lost everything from my childhood, but we'll rebuild a stronger future." Keeping her daughter in school provides a semblance of routine and positivity.

"It's uplifting for both of us," Trejo added.

Looking Ahead

Meanwhile, Brown is managing the loss of her personal residence, including her childhood home, and her mother's residence. Plans are in place for reconstruction.

Brown expressed determination, "Funding is crucial for rebuilding. This has been our vision since the school's inception. Our goal remains to create an extraordinary facility for our students."
