Memphis Man Convicted in Fiji for Murdering Wife During Honeymoon

A man from Memphis, Tennessee, has been convicted in Fiji for the murder of his wife while they were on their honeymoon in 2022, as reported by the prosecutor’s office.

Bradley Robert Dawson, aged 40, was sentenced for killing his 36-year-old wife, Christe Chen. The tragic event took place at the plush Turtle Island Resort, located in the Yasawa Islands, just two days after their arrival in Fiji. Following a dispute overheard by other guests, the couple did not make an appearance at breakfast or lunch, leading to the grim discovery of Chen's body with multiple severe head injuries.

Trial and Judgment

Justice Riyaz Hamza of the Lautoka High Court declared Dawson guilty last Thursday, concluding a trial that spanned a week, as per the statement from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Despite Dawson's defense claims, the evidence pointed unequivocally to his guilt.

Dawson's arrest came as he was in possession of his passport and other personal items, indicating a potential plan to escape. Judge Hamza expressed certainty about Dawson's culpability for the crime.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Dawson remains incarcerated in Fiji and awaits sentencing, which includes a compulsory life imprisonment term. According to Fijian laws, the presiding judge may later determine a minimum prison term before the possibility of parole arises.

No statement was available from Dawson's legal representative following the ruling.

Background and Aftermath

In a disturbing account from 2022, an attorney for Christe Chen's bereaved family detailed the extent of her injuries, which were so severe that her body could not be preserved for transportation back to the United States. Consequently, Chen's remains were cremated. Before her untimely death, she had been employed as a pastry chef and later pursued a career as a pharmacist at a Memphis Kroger store.

Attorney Ronald Gordon, representing the Chen family, noted the couple's argument over dinner before the crime took place.

Allegations and Personal Backgrounds

At the time of his arrest, Dawson was working within the IT department of Youth Villages, a nonprofit focused on child welfare located in Memphis. Searches of public records revealed no previous legal troubles for Dawson in Shelby County.

Turtle Island Resort, known for its exclusivity, occupies 500 acres and offers accommodation for only 14 couples simultaneously. Positioned among the scenic Yasawa Islands, it's part of Fiji's enchanting archipelago known for its natural beauty, home to over 930,000 residents.
