Authorities from the United States and Guatemala have apprehended individuals in relation to a tragic 2021 incident that resulted in the deaths of more than 50 migrants, connecting them to a broader human smuggling operation.

Apprehensions in Guatemala and Texas

This Monday saw the capture of five individuals in Guatemala along with one in Texas, attributed to their involvement in human trafficking activities. Officials from both countries confirmed these arrests. The tragic event occurred on December 9, 2021, when a transport vehicle carrying at least 160 migrants toppled near Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas state's capital in southern Mexico.

Details of the Catastrophe

Reports indicated that the vehicle was moving at a high speed when it failed to navigate a sharp curve, leading to a collision with a pedestrian bridge and subsequent nearby construction. This disaster led to the loss of over 50 lives and injuries to more than 100 individuals. A significant number of the victims were reportedly from Guatemala.

International Cooperative Efforts

At the behest of the United States, Guatemalan forces detained four members of the smuggling network. Identified by U.S. prosecutors, those arrested include Tomas Quino Canil, Alberto Marcario Chitic, Oswaldo Manuel Zavala Quino, and Josefa Quino Canil De Zavala. Additionally, Jorge Agapito Ventura was arrested in Cleveland, Texas.

Guatemalan officials noted the apprehension of a sixth person, but specifics of this individual's identity were withheld from public disclosures.

These arrests transpired near the third anniversary of the devastating accident. The Southern District of Texas has charged these five Guatemalans with conspiring to illegally transport migrants to the U.S., alongside charges of endangering the migrants' lives, causing them grievous harm and fatalities.
