Trump Pledges Day-One Action on January 6 Defendants

During an appearance on NBC's 'Meet the Press', President-elect Donald Trump vowed to take immediate steps concerning certain individuals charged in connection with the events of January 6. Trump expressed a belief that various House members who participated in the investigation should face legal consequences, including Rep. Bennie Thompson and former Rep. Liz Cheney.

In a dialogue with Kristen Welker, Trump clarified he would not directly command the FBI or the attorney general, but anticipated they would examine the possibility. When questioned about potentially pardoning those involved in the Capitol riot, Trump dismissed a collective pardon, opting instead to assess cases individually.

Trump affirmed his commitment to promptly addressing challenges concerning January 6 suspects, planning to take action immediately upon assuming office. 'From day one,' he emphasized.

An analysis of Department of Justice records reveals about 1,560 individuals related to the January 6 events, with approximately 590 accused of assaulting law enforcement officers. Over 900 defendants have admitted guilt.

Some defendants anticipate potential exoneration or relief from Trump, particularly those accused of violent conduct.

For instance, Joseph Hutchinson, facing charges for allegedly assailing police during the riot and evading capture for three years, has filed for release, arguing that he's not evading trial and is awaiting a pardon.

Trump has been noncommittal on whether he would let new or ongoing investigations and prosecutions for the Capitol riot proceed. A surge of further arrests appears imminent.
