TikTok Star Arrested for Allegedly Displaying Stolen Goods Online
A social media influencer, admired by more than 360,000 TikTok followers, found herself in legal trouble after being accused of pilfering approximately $500 in merchandise from a Target store.
According to law enforcement, this 'momfluencer' later uploaded a video showing her so-called shopping spree to her fans, inadvertently aiding investigators in pinpointing her identity.
The Theft Incident
The Cape Coral Police in Florida were alerted last Wednesday regarding a theft incident at the Target in Cape Coral, dated October 30.
Target’s loss prevention team reported that a woman, hiding her identity, entered the store and manipulated the system by scanning incorrect price barcodes at a self-service checkout.
Officials stated that the woman walked away with 16 items, a combination of household essentials and apparel, summing up to a loss of $500.32.
Identifying the Suspect
In their pursuit to identify the suspect, the police department circulated images across social platforms to get public assistance.
An undisclosed tipster revealed crucial information, leading officers to 22-year-old Marlena Velez, directing them to her social media presence.
Investigators quickly located her TikTok page, noticing a video featuring Velez dressed identically to the individual captured in the surveillance footage.
Crucial Evidence
The video, recently pulled from her account, supposedly depicted Velez at Target, selecting goods and stashing them in her car to exit without payment.
In a follow-up communication, police spokeswoman Mercedes Phillips articulated that every detail was meticulously recorded, including her attire.
Phillips elaborated, "The video documents her preparation for the outing, even showcasing her distinct glasses, all correlating to the suspect's photo we've released."
Legal Proceedings and Aftermath
Attempts to hear Velez's side, through Business Insider, went unanswered.
According to records from Lee County Sheriff's Office, a name variant Marlena Valez, matching the birthdate, encountered charges on Thursday morning.
Subsequent records indicate her release on the same day, facilitated by a $150 cash bond.
