My Journey from the US to Canada: Building My Family with Surrogacy

The decision to relocate to Canada for my spouse's career opportunities was not just a geographical shift, it reshaped my future in unexpected ways. Unbeknownst to me, this move would eventually provide the path for expanding our family, a feat that would have been financially impossible back in the US.

A Serendipitous Encounter

In a bustling New York City café, an unusual blind date for a magazine column led me to meet my future husband. His Canadian charm quickly won me over, and soon, we found ourselves cohabitating and engaged. With his professional base in Toronto and most of his family in Canada, post-nuptial life naturally unfolded there, where we eagerly planned to start our family.

A Health Battle and Family Aspirations

Welcoming our first son at the age of 40, I enjoyed the comfort of paid maternity leave. However, returning to work, I discovered the unmistakable sign of a lump in my breast. Though the cancer was treatable, it dashed any hopes of a second pregnancy. Yet, seeing my son grow, I longed for him to have a sibling as my sister had been my unyielding support during my health trials.

Exploring Surrogacy in a New Land

Despite the daunting costs associated with surrogacy in the United States, my husband and I had preserved embryos as a future option. Canada, where the commercial aspect of surrogacy is outlawed, surprisingly provided a feasible solution. Finding potential surrogates within social media circles, we were drawn to a Quebec woman who had successfully helped others before.

A Unique Connection

Our initial meeting with the surrogate was heartfelt, filled with genuine rapport and laughter. By the end of the day, plans were in motion. Although not without expenses—legal fees, and covering her job's health-related leave—these didn't approach the exorbitant sums required in the US. The bond we formed was rewarding beyond measure; she became not just our surrogate but the lifelong godmother to our child.

A Grateful Conclusion

While breast cancer forever altered my life, preventing natural childbirth, it inadvertently paved the road to Canada's supportive environment, facilitating our family's growth that was otherwise financially untenable. Our surrogate remains one of our cherished friends, reminding us of the incredible journey that was only made possible through our move north.

Now, with our family complete, my gratitude extends deeply to our surrogate and the supportive Canadian laws that helped bring this dream to fruition.
