Lou Donaldson, Celebrated Alto Saxophonist, Passes Away at 98

Renowned for his exceptional skill and a consistent presence at Blue Note Records, Lou Donaldson made his mark as both a frontman and accompanist from the early 1950s.

Lou Donaldson, a pivotal figure in jazz and a saxophonist whose soulful, blues-infused style resonated through his lengthy career, has died at the age of 98. His family confirmed his passing, however, the location of his death was not disclosed.

Donaldson became a defining artist for Blue Note during its most influential era, starting his recording streak as both a lead and supporting musician in 1952. He was a prominent advocate for 'hard bop,' a direct evolution of bebop that drew inspiration from his alto sax role model, Charlie Parker. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2012.

Known affectionately as Sweet Poppa Lou, Donaldson's artistry was a blend of flawless technique and a deep, expressive tone. He cherished the gospel traditions of African American church music and the raw edge of rhythm and blues, both of which he weaved into his solos. At the core of his music was the blues, epitomized by the critically acclaimed 1958 album 'Blues Walk,' whose titular track became a staple of jazz.

In addition to his own musical achievements, Donaldson was instrumental in guiding prominent talents to Blue Note, including both Clifford Brown, a towering figure on the trumpet, and later, the virtuoso guitarist Grant Green.

Donaldson recounted in his unpublished autobiography, 'A Wonderful Life,' how he introduced Clifford Brown to Blue Note founder Alfred Lion, leading to a significant New York recording session.

Furthermore, Donaldson played a key role in convincing Lion to allow Horace Silver, the composer and pianist who would become synonymous with 'the Blue Note sound,' to have his first recording session as a leader.
