Alleged Tennessee Bear Attack Stager Captured, Officials Announce

A man implicated in a fabricated bear attack murder in Tennessee has been apprehended after an extensive search across the nation, authorities have confirmed.

Law enforcement officials disclosed that the suspect was located in Columbia, South Carolina, and apprehended on Sunday night at a hospital, where his identity was authenticated using fingerprint analysis by the FBI. He faces severe charges.

Steven Lloyd's Suspicious Death

Steven Douglas Lloyd, aged 34, was discovered deceased in mid-October in Knoxville, with his death initially concealed as a bear attack. This was later connected to the suspect, Nicholas Wayne Hamlett.

Late in the evening of October 18, the Sheriff's Office in Monroe County responded to a call passed from Polk County. The caller, identifying himself as Brandon Andrade, reported an accident, claiming to have plunged off a cliff while evading a bear, sustaining injuries and partially landing in water.

The authorities traced the call to the vicinity of the Charles Hall Bridge on the Cherohala Skyway in Tellico Plains, located over 80 miles from Chattanooga. Upon arrival, the responders found a deceased person carrying ID that supposedly belonged to Andrade.

Investigating officers soon realized that the deceased was not Andrade, and the identification had been misappropriated multiple times. The true identity of the body was revealed to be Lloyd.

Further inquiries showed Hamlett had fraudulently used Andrade’s identity and was wanted in Alabama for violating parole, leading to the realization that he had concocted the false narrative upon calling for help and left Tennessee prior to any identity confirmation.

Background and Investigation Insights

Conversations with Lloyd's relatives revealed that he was a foster child, struggling with significant trust issues due to a condition hindering positive relationship formation with primary caregivers.

It is believed that Hamlett crossed paths with Lloyd at some juncture before the orchestrated murder. Allegedly, Hamlett formed a friendship with Lloyd only to lure him into a wooded location, ultimately taking his life and stealing his identity.

Reports pinpoint Hamlett's connections across various states, including Montana, Kentucky, and Florida, highlighting the risk he posed with potential access to weaponry during the fugitive hunt.
