Al Roker's Perspective on Using Ozempic for Weight Loss
At 70 years old, Al Roker speaks openly about not passing judgment on individuals opting for Ozempic and similar medications to shed pounds.
Roker explained that food dependency is unlike other addictions. One can abstain from alcohol or tobacco, but abstaining from food isn't an option, making eating a challenge for many. 'If using these medications is beneficial, who are we to criticize?' he remarked.
Roker's Personal Health Journey
Roker has shared his personal battle with binge eating and his weight loss achievements over the years. In 2002, he underwent gastric bypass surgery, reducing his weight significantly from 340 pounds.
His weight has fluctuated since, but he emphasizes portion control as a key strategy for managing his eating habits. Nevertheless, he hesitates to offer advice, acknowledging that everyone experiences ups and downs.
Defending Others' Choices
Roker also came to Kelly Clarkson's defense after she faced criticism for using prescription medication for weight loss. During 'The Kelly Clarkson Show,' she revealed a significant weight loss attributed to medication, though not Ozempic.
On the 'Today' show, Roker criticized society's tendency to judge, advocating that individuals should make informed decisions with their healthcare providers.
Rising Popularity of Ozempic
Celebrities like Elon Musk have attested to the effectiveness of GLP-1 medications, including Ozempic, in weight management. Approved by the FDA in 2021 as Wegovy for obesity treatment, Ozempic's active component is semaglutide.
Initially intended for diabetes treatment, these medications aid significant weight loss in clinical trials. However, they may not resolve emotional eating, an issue rooted in managing feelings rather than hunger.
According to psychotherapist Brianna Paruolo, emotional eating serves as a coping mechanism, which Ozempic's regulation of hunger can't address.
