The former leader of NetEase's esports division, along with the past general manager of NetEase Games, have reportedly been apprehended for charges related to money laundering and bribery. These individuals, Xiang Liang and Jin Yuchen, alongside other former employees, are under scrutiny for their roles in this alleged corporate misconduct.

Massive Financial Scandal Uncovered

Reports from the Chinese media outlet Leifeng suggest that the implicated ex-employees might have laundered between 800 million and 1 billion yuan, which translates to roughly $111 million to $139 million. While NetEase has acknowledged to Bloomberg Law that there is an ongoing police investigation concerning possible financial improprieties, they did not provide further specifics. As a reaction, the company has reportedly terminated nine employees suspected of involvement in bribery.

Broader Implications and Corporate Boycotts

In connection to this scandal, external parties have also been drawn into the investigation. According to Yicai Global, an internal memo indicated that NetEase plans to sever ties with 27 businesses implicated in the fraud allegations, effectively banning them from future dealings with the company.

NetEase is renowned for developing popular games like Diablo Immortal and Naraka: Bladepoint, the latter known for maintaining an impressive average of over 109,000 players on Steam. Additionally, the company is poised to introduce new free-to-play games under significant franchises, namely Marvel Rivals and Destiny: Rising.

Incidents of financial misconduct, such as bribery and insider trading, are not unheard of in the gaming industry. Last year, Yuji Naka, co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, received a suspended sentence and was fined more than $1.1 million following his confession to insider trading activities.
