Deadly Collision in Michigan: Four Fatalities After Truck Hits Stopped Vehicles

A tragic accident occurred late Saturday night on a Michigan highway resulting in four fatalities and significant injuries to 17 individuals, including children.

The incident took place near 11:40 p.m. on Interstate 96, just east of Lansing, Michigan, as representatives from DTE Energy were setting up power lines across the road, according to the Michigan State Police.

Due to the work, there was a brief but complete shutdown of the road to facilitate the process, the police noted.

Following the shutdown, vehicles began to accumulate, creating a traffic jam. A semi truck, towing a trailer loaded with bananas, approached this line of halted cars.

Sadly, the truck driver failed to perceive the stopped vehicles in time, according to state police, resulting in an inability to halt his truck.

The ensuing collision caused flames to engulf the truck and several other vehicles, involving a total of 15 vehicles, the police reported.

Among the deceased were three individuals related to one another from Lansing – specifically, two women aged 20 and 43, along with a 47-year-old man, all traveling in a Chevy Trax. Additionally, a 29-year-old man from Carson City, Michigan, driving a Ford F-150, passed away.

State police adhere to a policy of not disclosing the victims' identities publicly.

The semi truck's driver was hospitalized at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor for burn injuries.

The investigation was in its early stages, and it remains unclear what legal repercussions the truck driver might face, as stated by a police spokesperson.

Among those sent to the University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, one individual was in critical condition while two had stabilized, according to hospital spokesman Chris Zoladz.

Patients were also admitted to McLaren Greater Lansing, but their medical statuses were not immediately available.

On the following day, cleanup operations commenced to remove debris from the westbound lanes of the interstate, with the overpass remaining closed pending a structural assessment by the State Department of Transportation.

DTE Energy's representative, Colleen Rosso, explained that their crew's work on the power lines was aimed at enhancing the reliability of the electric service network.

Rosso expressed sympathy towards the affected families and those injured in the tragic event.
