Tragic Attack on Spanish Monastery Leaves Friar Dead and Several Injured
An unidentified individual wielded a deadly assault at the Monastery of Santo Espíritu del Monte in Gilet, Spain, resulting in the death of one friar and injuries to several others.
The suspect entered the monastery grounds with aggression at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, brandishing a blunt weapon, according to a release from the Province of the Immaculate Conception of the Franciscan Order.
The monks had just completed breakfast and were in their quarters when the incident unfolded, as per the details provided by the order.
Among the brethren, Brother Ángel Ramón bravely confronted the assailant and managed to alert the police, the order noted. Prompt assistance was rendered by the Civil Guard and local police in Gilet.
The identities and health statuses of the injured friars have not been disclosed at this time.
The monastery is part of the larger Province of the Immaculate Conception, which is situated within Valencia, a region recently impacted by a tragedy claiming over 200 lives.
Authorities are actively searching for the perpetrator, who is described as middle-aged.
