AI Integration for Windows Notepad Users

AI Integration for Windows Notepad Users

If you thought Microsoft skipped adding artificial intelligence to Notepad, think again. There's a new feature on the horizon that might change your mind.

The latest innovation for Windows Insiders using Windows 11 is an AI-powered Rewrite function for Notepad. This tool, using GPT technology, is designed to enhance your writing by altering sentences, tweaking the tone, or adjusting the length of your text.

To try out this new Rewrite feature, ensure you are using the latest Canary or Dev build of Windows 11. Start by signing up for the Windows Insider program and then proceed to Settings, tap on Windows Update, and hit the 'Check for Updates' button.

Additionally, ensure your Notepad application is up-to-date. Open the Microsoft Store app, select Downloads, and update your installed apps as necessary.

It is important to log into Windows using your Microsoft account linked to the Insider program. This authentication is crucial for accessing Rewrite, as it depends on cloud services and credits for AI functionality.

Once you're set up, open Notepad and draft some text—from a brief phrase to a full document. Highlight the text you want altered, then right-click and choose 'Rewrite,' select the function on the toolbar, or use the shortcut Ctrl + I. You can specify how you want the revisions made, whether it’s to extend or condense the text, adjust the tone from informal to formal, or change the overall structure.

The AI will offer three rewritten versions of your text. Examine each version carefully and decide which one suits your needs best. If they don't satisfy you, you can modify the settings and try again. Once you're content with a version, you can apply the revised text to your original document.

Microsoft offers different credits for Rewrite based on your region and Microsoft services subscriptions.

Users located in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Italy, and Germany initially receive 50 credits. Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers, which includes users from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan, are allotted 60 credits monthly.

For Copilot Pro users, the benefit is an extensive use of AI features—practically unlimited access. These AI credits are applicable not only in Notepad but extend to various Microsoft software like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Forms, Designer, Photos, and Paint.

If you exhaust your monthly credits, subscribing to Microsoft 365 is the way to get more. Otherwise, expect credits to renew automatically when the next month starts.

As of now, the Rewrite option is exclusively available in Dev or Canary builds of Windows 11, so regular Notepad users might need to wait a few months for the feature's general availability.
