David Heinemeier Hansson Views AI as Not Yet on Par with Junior Programmers, Prefers Hand-Coding

Ruby on Rails mastermind, David Heinemeier Hansson, presently relies predominantly on manual coding due to AI's current limitations.

David Heinemeier Hansson maintains a cautiously optimistic stance about AI's long-term potential, though current developments haven't altered his coding methodology significantly.

"It's akin to a dim lightbulb flickering sporadically," Hansson explained on the podcast "Next Token." "One moment illumination strikes, revealing all seen, and then abruptly it fades to black."

Upon tasking AI with generating code, Hansson noted, the outcome lacks the proficiency displayed by even novice programmers he's partnered with.

Manual Coding at 37 Signals

He noted that at his company 37 Signals, there is no decrease in productivity or innovation as they rely less on AI. Instead, they maintain a strong manual coding practice.

For their Kanban-based software 'Fizzy', humans contributed to 95% of the development work. Although AI was explored for certain features, they were ultimately discarded.

Focusing on hand-crafted code allows Hansson to cultivate its elegance—a luxury he likens to the meticulous craft of a saddle maker, valuing precision in their handiwork despite changing times.

AI in the Commercial Arena

Despite his reservations, Hansson acknowledges impressive AI advancements at Shopify, where he is a board member. Their AI tool, SiteKick, enhances merchants' operations effectively.

These innovations kindle excitement in Hansson for future developments, much like the seismic shifts seen when mobile optimization became mainstream after the iPhone's debut.

Navigating Future AI Prospects

"A reality where the landscape shifts dramatically is upon us," Hansson conveyed. "Embrace the unknown, relish the excitement, and prepare for an exhilarating journey," he advises.

There is no sidestepping the AI evolution. While individual choices can steer clear of AI reliance, the judicial rolling back of AI progress isn't feasible.

Hansson is struck by the monumental investment in AI, with vast sectors of the US economy wagering on AI reaching its full potential.

"America's economic engine banks on AI breakthroughs, exemplifying a robust drive and a willingness to invest unparalleled resources," he marveled.
