Family Accuses ICE of Using Tear Gas While Children Were in Their Car
In the Minneapolis area, a couple with six young children claim they were caught in a dangerous situation involving tear gas during a confrontation with ICE agents.
Shawn and Destiny Jackson, parents of six kids ranging from 6 months to 11 years old, were returning from basketball practice. They found themselves amidst a clash between demonstrators and ICE personnel.
"Agents yelled at our vehicle and used foul language, telling us to leave," recounted Destiny. Despite their efforts to comply, they couldn't drive off due to the agents' proximity.
According to the couple, agents intensified their demands. "We responded, 'We are trying to leave, but you're in the way,'" Destiny continued, emphasizing their predicament. They were unable to move without putting everyone in danger.
Destiny described how officers walked to the rear of their SUV, releasing tear gas underneath.
"An explosion followed, lifting our vehicle, deploying airbags, and locking our doors," she recounted, describing the terrifying moment when tear gas began enveloping them.
Attempts to reach Homeland Security for official comment on the event were made.
Destiny explained how panic set in when the gas was released: "I unlocked all the doors, jumped out, and started pulling out my children."
Strangers from nearby homes came to their rescue. They helped extract the children from the fumes and gave them shelter.
"My youngest was the last to be freed," Destiny shared, "He appeared lifeless with foam around his mouth. I revived him using CPR despite my own breathlessness."
Shawn and Destiny are high school sweethearts with a longstanding admiration for law enforcement. However, this encounter has left them questioning the care shown toward their family.
"Our car's windows were open, and our children were visible," Shawn noted, whereas Destiny expressed frustration over the agents' apparent lack of regard for their safety.
Although the children remain physically unharmed, the emotional trauma is significant. A fund has been initiated to help them cover healthcare costs and vehicle damage.
