Despite an almost complete internet embargo enforced by the Iranian regime in response to large-scale anti-government demonstrations, a slice of the population is maintaining global communication via satellite connections.

Starlink, associated with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has assumed a significant and, according to foreign activists, vital part in keeping Iran linked to the international community as the nation’s rulers resort to forceful measures to suppress the uprisings.

Providing high-velocity internet capability, Starlink excels in areas where connectivity is limited, covering remote lands and maritime locations. Previously, it has been employed in war-stricken zones; for instance, SpaceX introduced Starlink to Ukraine amid Russian aggression, which then became indispensable for both civilians and military forces.

Activists report that much of the video and photographic evidence from the protests, which surfaced subsequent to the communication curtailment, has been relayed through Starlink.

The Role of Satellite Internet in Activism

Farzaneh Badiei, an expert in internet regulations with an interest in Iran, asserted the technology’s crucial function in providing both internal and external visibility.

"Each instance of internet blockade has coincided with increased casualties," she noted. "Open internet access permits greater transparency, enabling citizens to document and report such incidents live."

Jonathan McDowell, an expert in satellite technology from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, remarked on the resilience of the system, explaining that government attempts to obstruct it are made difficult by the absence of physical infrastructure to sever.

Limitations and Legal Resistance

While Starlink's extensive satellite network spans much of the globe, it is not legally sanctioned everywhere.

Iranian authorities have reacted to its presence by enforcing legislative and regulatory measures in an effort to curb its use. Nonetheless, activists have observed an increase in the number of devices present in the country.

Ahmad Ahmadian of Holistic Resilience—a group aiding Iranians to bypass internet censorship—estimated around 50,000 units smuggled into the nation.

Some activists propose SpaceX has exempted Iranian users from subscription charges, although official confirmation from SpaceX or U.S. authorities is lacking.

Understanding the Perils and Potential

While critics express concerns over the dependency on privately governed internet services, given the overwhelming support from U.S. for the movement, this issue seems minimal for now.

The use of Starlink poses significant risk, as the Iranian regime actively pursues individuals utilizing these devices.

Cybersecurity specialist Amir Rashidi highlighted that while authorities attempt to jam signals, the success is uneven, suggesting its ongoing viability in certain areas.

He optimistically noted the current technological limitations prevent a comprehensive shutdown of Starlink services in Iran.
