María Machado Meets Trump: Sharing Nobel Honors for Venezuelan Achievements
Venezuelan figurehead María Corina Machado will join President Trump for a meal at the White House. Earlier, Machado had expressed her desire to share her Nobel Prize with Trump, praising his landmark actions in removing Nicolás Maduro from power.
In a conversation with Fox News, Machado emphasized the significance of Trump's actions for Venezuela. 'The Venezuelan populace sees this as a collective victory. We wish to bestow and share this with him, marking a pivotal move towards democracy,' she affirmed.
However, the Trump administration has remained largely silent on endorsing any political transition in Venezuela, which is currently under the interim leadership of Delcy Rodríguez, previously vice president to Maduro.
Machado's Role in a New Venezuelan Era
Despite speculations, Trump has not declared support for Machado's potential leadership in Venezuela. He expressed doubts about her acceptance and influence within the country, suggesting challenges she might face.
In an interview with CBS Evening News' Tony Dokoupil, Machado insisted that the Venezuelan public has already cast their choice. 'Our group is prepared to serve the people, fulfilling our mandate,' Machado stated confidently.
Nobel Committee's Response and Energy Concerns
The chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, clarified that the Nobel Prize is indivisible and non-transferable. Machado earned the award due to her role in unifying a fragmented opposition, pushing for electoral freedom and governance representation.
Amidst these diplomatic gestures, the U.S. has taken economic actions, notably seizing oil tankers, with the latest seizure confirmed by the Pentagon. Concurrently, the U.S. completed a $500 million transaction in Venezuelan oil, marking a significant economic step.
