A Critical Update Required for Millions of Audio Devices to Thwart Bluetooth Hacking
The seamless Fast Pair protocol, designed by Google for effortless device interconnectivity, has been found to contain vulnerabilities that compromise privacy and security. These vulnerabilities allow unauthorized control over audio gear such as earbuds and speakers on a mass scale.
Researchers from KU Leuven University's Computer Security and Industrial Cryptography group in Belgium have identified flaws in 17 audio products from companies including Sony, Jabra, JBL, and Google itself. Dubbed WhisperPair, these vulnerabilities let attackers within Bluetooth range gain control over these devices.

An attacker could misuse these vulnerabilities to stream their own audio through an unsuspecting user's devices, eavesdrop on conversations, or covertly activate microphones. KU Leuven’s researcher Sayon Duttagupta highlights the ease of hijacking. With just 15 seconds, a hacker can intercept a device to inject audio, listen to surrounding noises, or follow the user's movements.
