When the United States initiated a surprise air offensive to apprehend Venezuela's ousted leader, Nicolás Maduro, the country's reliance on Chinese-manufactured anti-aircraft radar systems seemingly fell short. Despite the presence of these radars, they did not significantly bolster Venezuelan defenses.

Code-named Operation Absolute Resolve, the mission featured over 150 aircraft from the US fleet, none of which suffered losses. A US helicopter did incur machine gun fire, yet managed to continue its operations.

The JY-27A radars, China's cutting-edge mobile detection technology, were expected to spot stealth jets like the F-22 and F-35 from a distance exceeding 150 miles, as boasted by Beijing. However, the unanticipated raid by US special forces in Caracas highlighted possible flaws, be they technical or operational.

Radar Efficacy Called into Question

Following the raid, inquiries arose regarding the effectiveness of the military hardware Venezuela acquired from China. A Japanese journalist probed a Chinese official about the apparent inefficacy of these systems during the assault, to which the spokesperson only criticized the US's military action.

The JY-27A radar, operational since 2014, includes extended-range capabilities designed to locate hostile aircraft, claiming resilience against jamming attempts. Despite newer iterations like the JY-27V, its battlefield performance under scrutiny raises doubts about its practical utility.

Operational Challenges

An expert at the Hudson Institute, Michael Sobolik, suggested that while the radar's capabilities sound impressive, its true test is during combat. Speculations arose that either advanced electromagnetic tactics outplayed these radars or they were mishandled by the operators.

Without fully functioning detection systems, air defense teams face significant disadvantages. The US air force reportedly overwhelmed Venezuelan defenses, which comprised several Russian-made systems along with the Chinese radars.

Air Defense Network and Operational Effectiveness

Post-operation reviews didn’t elaborate on the Chinese technology but ridiculed the Russian systems' ineffectiveness. Venezuela’s conditions seemed inadequate for cohesive air defense environments, presenting critical questions about the overall efficacy of the defense network and the operators' competency.

A study by the Miami Strategic Intelligence Institute evaluated Venezuela’s air defenses as largely deficient. Over 60% of radar systems are reportedly out of service, military aviation occurs sporadically, and there exists scant maintenance backing.
