Trump Criticizes Jerome Powell's Federal Reserve Leadership

In a conversation with CBS Evening News' Tony Dokoupil in Michigan, President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Jerome Powell's performance as the head of the Federal Reserve. Trump criticized Powell for not reducing interest rates more aggressively and took issue with an ongoing renovation at the central bank.

Trump, who appointed Powell himself in 2017, was surprised by Powell's reappointment under President Biden, arguing that Powell hadn't sufficiently proven his capabilities. This critique came amid the Justice Department recently issuing subpoenas as part of an investigation concerning renovations to Federal Reserve buildings.

The planned refurbishment for the Fed's main Washington office and an adjacent property has ballooned in cost from an initial $1.9 billion. Trump claimed he could have executed the renovations for a mere $25 million and implied that Powell might be either corrupt or simply inept.

Despite Trump’s claims, the White House denied any influence over the federal investigation into Powell. Trump dismissed any assertions that the Justice Department's actions were politically motivated.

In a statement, Powell attributed the investigation to resistance from within the Fed to Trump's repeated pressures to cut interest rates. This tension highlights Trump's longstanding grievances with Powell’s cautious approach to managing the nation’s monetary policy.

In defense of Powell’s tenure, former Federal Reserve leaders Janet Yellen, Ben Bernanke, and Alan Greenspan collectively argued that the Trump administration’s approach threatens the Fed's traditional independence.

Despite these critiques, Trump highlighted what he deemed his administration's economic successes, claiming to have fostered possibly the greatest economy ever.
